Bungie has sold out, they have started making games for the enemy, they
are no longer
loyal Mac fanatics and I am ecstatic! I use a Mac, I think the
MacOS is the best
operating system in existence and I am behind Apple completely, but
instead of
blindly striking out at everything not-Mac I, like most Mac-lovers,
can assess the
situation and see what it really means. There are many reasons why
Bungie's sell
out is beneficial to both the Mac and PC platforms, and to Mac and
PC gamers.
First, at least Bungie is still making Mac games. Witness Lucas
Arts, Id and
countless other companies that never release a game on the Mac or
release an ugly,
awkward port years after the game is released. Bungie is releasing
Myth
simultaneously on both platforms. This is a first for a major and
innovative game.
Second, Myth will show software companies the advantages of the Mac
market by allowing
a direct comparison between it and the PC world. When Myth is
released as a timely,
cutting-edge and Mac adapted game, companies will have an example
of how to release a
successful Mac game. They will also have an example of the vast
differences between
the Mac and PC markets and will see that Mac games require less
tech support, are
pirated less often and sell well.
Thirdly, PC gamers will be allowed to finally view the creativity
and innovation of
the Mac community. For example, Marathon Evil is a phenomenal
addition to Marathon,
it revitalizes the game and makes it interesting again. Mac lovers
are often
considered unsophisticated gamers, but that myth will be dispelled
by Myth (pardon
the phrasing.)
Finally, the release of a cross-platform game will finally allow PC
gamers and Mac
gamers to associate on the same level, and share an exciting new
game together.
Hopefully we'll find that a gamer is a gamer, no matter what his or
her platform.
At the very least I'll get to kick PCer butt!
